FOOTBALL

  • Cobourne earned offensive honors after running for 107 yards on 16 carries, and also posting 103 yards and a touchdown on five catches in Montreal's 32-14 win over Toronto.

    The defensive prize went to Montreal defensive tackle Keron Williams. He had three sacks and finished with four tackles in the victory over Toronto. Williams has six sacks on the season, the third most in the league.

  • The eight-year veteran was released by the Tiger-Cats earlier this year. In 2007, Wayne made 13 starts for Hamilton, making 16 tackles, two tackles for losses and one forced fumble.

    After being drafted with the 21st overall pick in the 2000 CFL Canadian College Draft by Calgary, Wayne has played in 102 games and has been in the Grey Cup.

BASKETBALL

  • Tyson, a second-team All-Mid Eastern Athletic Conference pick who averaged 20.2 points in 32 games for the Hawks last season, was sidelined due to academic reasons.

    "Tyson has rendered himself academically ineligible and will no longer be part of the men's basketball program," Allen said.

  • Crean left Marquette in April to join Indiana, and on Tuesday inked a deal that will pay him $600,000 per year in base salary with an additional $15.72 million in outside marketing and promotional income during the life of the deal.

    The agreement is retroactive to April 2, 2008 and expires on June 30, 2018.

BASEBALL

  • The Red Sox said the Hall of Famer is undergoing evaluation and testing at Massachusetts General Hospital.

    Yastrzemski, who will turn 69 years old on Friday, was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1989 after a 23-year career with the BoSox. He first joined the team in 1961 and retired after the 1983 season.

  • The team optioned Reyes to the minors on July 28 after he had dropped his past five decisions over six starts with an 8.74 earned-run average.

    The rookie righty started three games with Richmond and posted a 3.94 ERA over 16 innings.

HOCKEY

  • The procedure was performed to help correct a chronic condition, and the recovery time is expected to take three to five months. He could be sidelined until mid-January.

    "Ryan has been bothered by this condition in his foot for some time," said Penguins general manager Ray Shero. "He consulted with a number of specialists in an effort to correct the problem without surgery, but it was ultimately determined that surgery was the best path to take -- for his general well- being, and for his career.

  • He has agreed to a multi-year contract with the team.

  • Arena, who becomes the seventh coach in club history, will oversee all of the club's soccer operations, including the first team, reserve and academy teams and youth development.

  • Edwards became just the second driver to score a weekend sweep at Michigan. Mark Martin won the Cup and Nationwide race there in August 1993. Edwards also joined Busch as the only drivers to record weekend sweeps at a track this season. Busch won both NASCAR races at Chicagoland last month.

  • The top-144 players on the FedEx Cup points list are eligible, but we know the field will be at least two players short as Tiger Woods and Luke Donald are out for the year with injuries.

    Six more players have decided to skip the event - Lee Westwood (No. 50 on the points list), Justin Rose (78), Alex Cejka (91), Jason Bohn (96), Bob Estes (124) and Roland Thatcher (140).

HORSES

  • "Genuine Risk was an amazing horse with tremendous heart that lived a life befitting a champion." said Bert and Diana Firestone in a release. "We are truly blessed that she was a part of our life and we are deeply saddened by her passing." Owned by Diana Firestone, Genuine Risk became only the second filly to win the Kentucky Derby when she made history in 1980. Sent off at odds of 13-1 she defeated Rumbo by one length in the 1 1/4 mile race.

    She was the first female to capture the Run for the Roses since Regret in 1915.

  • Proud Spell, ridden by Gabriel Saez, broke well from the gate and joined Little Belle, Music Note's entry-mate, on the lead.

    On the clubhouse turn Little Belle assumed the lead with Proud Spell in second, Mushka in third and Music Note running in fourth.
