The seventh-seeded Roddick got past 18th-seeded Spaniard Tommy Robredo 6-3, 7-5 on the hardcourts at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. The hard-serving American star moved on in 1 hour, 17 minutes with the help of two service breaks, one in each set, and six aces. Robredo failed to enjoy even one break- point chance on Day 9.

Roddick will next do battle with Soderling of Sweden, who handled fourth- seeded Brit Andy Murray 6-1, 7-6 (7-4) in 1 hour, 34 minutes.

Nadal a straight-set winner in Indian Wells QFs

The third-seeded Spaniard and former world No. 1 outlasted the 19th seed Czech Tomas Berdych 6-4, 7-6 (6-4) in 2 hours, 11 minutes here on the hardcourts at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.

Nadal, who won 73 percent of his first serves, beat Andy Murray in last year's Indian Wells finale and also titled here in 2007.

The second-seeded Djokovic outlasted 25th-seeded German Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (7-3) on the hardcourts at Indian Wells Tennis Garden. The 2008 Indian Wells titlist Djokovic staved off three match points while trailing 4-5 in the third set here on Day 5.

Djokovic prevailed in 2 hours, 35 minutes with a match-ending inside-out forehand winner. Up next for Djokovic will be 20th-seeded Croat Ivan Ljubicic.

Federer, Murray, Roddick victorious at BNP Paribas Open

Federer captured his fifth lifetime matchup without a loss against Romanian Victor Hanescu, 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 6-1. The top-ranked Swiss Federer, who won the title from 2004-06, played his first match since capturing his 16th career Grand Slam crown at the Australian Open on January 31.

Fourth-seeded Scotsman Andy Murray also went through to the third round with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Italian Andreas Seppi. Murray is last year's runner-up, losing to Rafael Nadal in the final.

Nalbandian, who prevailed in 2 hours, 35 minutes on Day 3, replaced Eduardo Schwank for the final rubber, while Vinciguerra moved in for Joachim Johansson.

This marks only Nalbandian's second event this year after returning to action following hip surgery last year.
